ECHOES OF THE REBELLIOUS SPRING OF 1876: MARGINAL NOTES BY PRIEST PETKO T. FRANGOV

Abstract

This study introduces into scholarly circulation previously unknown marginal notes written by Priest Petko T. Frangov (1855–1931) shortly after the suppression of the April Uprising of 1876 in the First Revolutionary District. The texts were discovered in a bound volume containing two 19th-century printed books preserved in the collection of the National Library “St. St. Cyril and Methodius.” The notes include a personal commemorative message and a devotional text titled “Prayer to the Mother of God,” both characterized by strong autobiographical elements. The article situates these marginalia within the broader tradition of inscription practices in Bulgarian printed books during the National Revival period and emphasizes their value as primary historical sources.
